Mahima lives a middle-class lifestyle with her parents, Pooja and music teacher,Gautam. She is in love with a young man, Anuraag, whose foster father, Pratap, is very friendly with Gautam. Both Gautam and Pratap arrange to get the youngsters married, however, when they arrive at Pratap's house, they are met with open hostility by Pratap's wife, Shanti, her sons, Sukhpal, Shripal, and their respective wives Shobha and Suman, and do not approve of her as she did not bring in any dowry. Nevertheless, Mahima, a devotee of Devi Maa Santoshi, decides to win them over with her love and hard work. Then Anuraag is accused of stealing one Lakh rupees from the family's electronic showroom, he vehemently denies this, and even offers to leave for Bombay, earn the money and then return. After his departure, Mahima is abused, belittled, and treated like a servant.

Pradeep realises that the real reason for his father's violent behavior at home is due to the problems at the tea garden. When he grows up, he decides to resolve these issues by joining a movement.

Chanderbabu (Nazir Hussain), a retired postmaster, lives in the village with his wife and two sons, Rajan (Paul Mahendra) and Bhanu (Bharat Bhushan). He continues to live there and work for the Zamindar, while his children are getting their education. Rajan is studying for his law exam. He is married to a girl (Padma) from a wealthy family whose haughty ways alarm and frightens him. Bhanu, the younger brother is fun-loving but studious. He gets influenced by the Nationalist Movement in the campus and stops his education in the last year of college. His father is disappointed and feels that Rajan is the one they can depend upon in their old age. Bhanu meets Meena (Shyama), and the two fall in love. Meera's father, Ramnarayan, is the school Principal and is impressed by Bhanu. He decides to get Meera married to Bhanu.

A multi-millionaire, Ram Khanna, is advised by a fake astrologer that he will meet and marry a woman whose name will start with "M". Ram does meet Mamta, and they both fall in love. Ram marries her, despite the fact that she is the daughter of a prostitute, Heerabai, and brings her home with her. Mamta gets a chilling welcome from Ram brother's, Murli Manohar, and his wife, Maya. Mamta decides to assert herself and takes over the household matters, forcing Murli and Maya to leave the house. Soon Mamta and Ram give birth to a baby boy. One day Ram asks Mamta to take care of a suitcase full of cash, as he has to go out of town. Mamta is lured out of the house along with the suitcase, and is brutally killed by Gulu Goli, a hired hit-man, who buries her in a secluded spot. Though physically dead and buried, Mamta's spirit is still alive and active, though she cannot be heard, nor seen by anyone. She decides to return home and expose Murli and Maya.
